Current Savings Bonds Rates

APY and APR DifferenceEE Bond Rates

Current Interest Rate EE Bonds:

0.10 % per year (Fixed Rate Until Maturity)

This rate applies to all EE bonds purchased between November 1st, 2013 and April 30th, 2014. On May 1st, 2014, a new rate will be posted that will apply to EE Bonds purchased between May 1st, 2014  and October 31st, 2014.

The rate is locked in for 20 years. While the bond will keep earning interest for an additional 10 years, the rate may be adjusted up or down based on the market rate at that time.  Interest is added monthly (posted the first of every month), and compounded semi-annually.

Effective Interest Rate On EE Saving Bonds When Held To Maturity:

Approx 3.5%

EE bonds are guaranteed to double in value if held to maturity. At maturity, the Treasury Department will make a one time adjustment to value of the bond, if the interest rate applied for the 20 year period did not result in the double of value of the bond. This only applies to EE Savings Bonds and is not applied pro-rata if redeemed prior to maturity.

I Bond Rates

Current Interest Rate:

1.38%

This rate applies ONLY FOR 6 MONTHS FOLLOWING THE ISSUE OF THE BOND FOR PURCHASES THAT OCCUR BETWEEN November 1st, 2013 and April 30th, 2014.

The interest on an I-Bond is composed of a fixed rate and a variable rate.  The fixed rate is known at the purchase date and will remain the same for the life of the bond.  The variable rate is set on May 1st and November 1st for the following 6 months, so it changes twice per year. The variable rate is based on twice the inflation that occurred during the last 6 months as measured by increase in the Consumer Price Index for all Urban Consumers.

You can basically think of the rate for an I-Bond as adding the fixed rate and the variable rate. The variable rate component can be negative and reduce the combined interest rate. However, the combined rate is not allowed to be negative during any period.

I-Bonds can earn interest for up to 30 years after issue. Interested is added monthly (posted the first of every month), and compounded semi-annually.
